Your Students Can Get Expert Help at 10:00 At Night

A student, Heather, came to see me in the library, extremely excited about an online tutoring service called Tutor.com. She was working on it as we talked -- chatting back and forth with an unseen, online geometry tutor ("Mark I"), who led her through a proof, drawing figures, circling important aspects on her screen, and prompting her to think with questions.  It was a remarkable interaction.

However, this sort of access is a bit pricey -- for $1200 a year, students can have online access to a tutor for a maximum of three hours per month.

But how incredible would that be if all of our students could have instant live tutoring, as long as they needed, in any subject?

Well, it turns out they can.  For free.

The Pima County Public library provides Brainfuse, a free, unlimited service just like Tutor.com, that all our students can use for free, to get help in multiple subject areas: math, English, social studies, science, and world languages.

Students can log in any day of the week, from 2:00pm until 11:00pm (even during school), and sign in for a session of live tutoring. Tutors are all graduates of 4-year institutions, with prior tutoring experience, who have been trained by Brainfuse.

Here's what students will see:

They can chat with their tutor, type in questions/problems, and even draw figures and write on the interactive whiteboard -- the tutor can write/draw/type back, responding to that student's particular strengths and needs.

But Brainfuse offers more than just live tutoring.

Students can also:

  • prepare for high-stakes tests like the SAT and ACT
  • create electronic flash cards
  • practice a new language
  • submit a paper for detailed feedback on content, style, punctuation and grammar -- within 24 hours

In order to access this resource, students must have their library card numbers (or their parents'). If they don't have a library card, they'll just need to go to a nearby branch with their parents to sign up. Parents will need to bring proof of residence (a utility bill, etc.), and a photo ID.
